The Couchbase team had a wonderful time participating at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2024, held from November 11-15, 2024, in Salt Lake City. The event brought together the cloud native community, with artificial intelligence and platform engineering emerging as the central themes. Our team was there in full force, engaging with the community across KubeCon and WasmCon.

AI and platform engineering take center stage

This year’s KubeCon highlighted the growing intersection of cloud-native technologies with AI and platform engineering. With over 9,000 attendees, the conference showcased how organizations are leveraging cloud native infrastructure to support Generative AI workflows and enhance platform engineering practices.

Couchbase’s multi-conference presence

Our DevRel team members, Laurent and Shivay, had a packed schedule at the event. They participated in multiple events, including WasmCon and KubeCon, and engaged with the community through speaking engagements and interactions.

WasmCon highlights

This year’s WasmCon showcased how companies are starting to understand the value of WebAssembly and are building tooling to support its adoption. American Express delivered a remarkable session on how they built an internal developer platform powered by WASM, helping their 1,500-strong development team with distinct technical stacks come under a single FaaS platform powered by WASM.

Laurent delivered an engaging workshop on building a WebAssembly-native Database API using Couchbase and WasmCloud, demonstrating the potential of WASM in modern database architectures. Shivay presented an insightful talk on Observability in WASM, exploring the expanding landscape of OpenTelemetry support for WASM workloads.

Couchbase WasmCon + KubeCon Meetup

Couchbase organized a meetup on the first day of WasmCon, which drew over 80 attendees. We had a lot of fun geeking out about WASM, databases, and cloud-native tooling, with drinks and great conversations.

KubeCon

In addition to WasmCon, we also had speaking engagements at the main KubeCon event and colocated events. Shivay delivered a lightning talk on how to orchestrate Argo Workflows with Java Fabric8.

At the main KubeCon event, Shivay co-hosted the ContribFest for the Meshery project alongside Lee Calcote from Layer5. The Contribfest is a special addition to KubeCon where interested attendees get a chance to contribute to different open source cloud native ecosystem projects and directly interact with the maintainers of the projects.

The Meshery Contribfest session focused on expanding Kanvas capabilities within Meshery, including a demonstration of how to integrate and visualize the Couchbase Autonomous Operator within the Kanvas environment.

Recap

We’re grateful to everyone who attended our sessions and meetup, and we look forward to continuing these valuable community interactions at future events.
