As a follow up to last week’s post on meeting Andy Kruth, this week we’re getting to know Brant Burnett, our Community Champion from North Carolina.

Tell us about yourself and what you do in your daily role?

Brant: I’m a lead developer at CenterEdge Software, where we focus on developing software solutions for the entertainment industry, such as waterparks, amusement parks, trampoline parks, etc. This includes everything from point-of-sale operations, to birthday party bookings, to time clocks, to online sales via a cloud platform.

Where are you based and what do you like to do in your spare time?

Brant: We’re based in Roxboro, North Carolina, about 45 minutes north of Research Triangle Park. My spare time is spent with family and assisting others with the .NET Couchbase SDKs, especially the LINQ provider.

What made you choose Couchbase?

Brant: We chose Couchbase at CenterEdge several years ago because of its ease of use and scalability for our cloud applications where we used it to store shopping carts and as a SQL cache. Since then, we’ve migrated to a pure Couchbase platform for our new cloud application suite.

What have you accomplished using Couchbase?

Brant: In our first implementation, we managed to drastically improve page latency performance over previous cloud implementations based on pure SQL. In particular, using Couchbase as the persisted data store for shopping carts, which experience heavy read/write loads, was a major boost. In our new cloud application suite, we’re successfully storing very large data sets for multiple customers in a single Couchbase cluster, which we can then scale out quickly and easily as our subscribed customer base grows.

What one feature of Couchbase do you use and what should people know about it?

Brant: I’m a big fan of the new Query Workbench for N1QL coming in version 4.5. There is a developer preview that works against Couchbase 4 and 4.1 that we regularly use for development and support in our production environment.

If you could have three wishes for Couchbase what would they be?

Brant: Couchbase is so great it’s hard to come up with wishes, but some things that would continue to close the gap with traditional SQL are:

  1. Full text search within Couchbase (coming in 4.5!)

  2. More advanced N1QL JOIN operations (improved in 4.5, but I’d love to see joins     against secondary indexes).

  3. More automated index redundancy with rebalance support as nodes fail

What is your favorite book or author, and why?

Brant: I’m a big fan of the work of Patrick Rothfuss, but I wish he’d write stuff a little more often. :)
